Happy February 27th of the year 2010! Or what all of us "Hawaiians" are now calling Tsunami Day. This morning, at 6am Hawaii time, Jeff and I were woken up to the lovely sound of the tsunami siren blaring through our open window. As we slowly opened our eyes we actually said out loud "I don't think this is one of those siren tests..." and then popped right out of bed. It was still dark outside. After flipping on the television and realizing what had happened in Chile, and what was possibly heading our way, we walked down to the grocery store to buy hydrating materials. OMG. From now on I will have water and food stocked and ready to go if another natural disaster occurs. (Although we did just go grocery shopping and were covered in the food department).
Conversations overheard in the store were...
1. I needed to go shopping anyway. What a great excuse to get it done so early!
2. They are out of water? Really? (Duh.)
3. Wow the lines are so long! Everyone must have waited til the last minute to prepare themselves! (DUH! You are one of those people..)
Although I give those last minute shoppers some credit. We did not even know about the earthquake until the siren went off. Normally we watch the news at 10pm but for some reason we skipped it last night. Jeff with his awesome intuition filled up his fuel tank in the truck yesterday. Way to go husband!
I immediately texted my friend Kimmy and her family (and 3 K-9 friends) inviting them to seek refuge on our cozy 6th floor view of the "action." We all ended up hanging out and having a great social time for a few hours or so. Our Assistant Store Manager at Starbucks, Heather, even stopped by to chat! She lives in Jeff and I's building but with an even nicer view a few floors up from us. =)
Overall I would have to give the Hawaiian goverment a pat on the back for keeping everyone informed and the emergency plans going smoothly. If a tsunami would have occured it could have been the most documented tsunami in history. I geek out on history stuff so this was an appetizing thought to me.
I am going to poke fun at my dad for a moment....so please forgive me dad, but you made me laugh today. This morning before the potential tsunami hit you were on the computer finding links for me and doing your awesome fatherly job of making your daughter as safe as possible. To those of us who know John Hausey you know how he gets into "the zone" when something's going down. (Very similar to how he is on parade days). I will reinact this conversation as accurately as possible.
Dad. "Where are you going to park the truck?"
Laura. "I don't care about the truck. What do you mean about the truck. Who cares about the truck!"
Dad. "Well you need to find out what direction the tsunami is coming from so you can park the truck on the other side of the building so the building takes the brunt of the wave. So it doesn't roll over or something."
Laura. "We are not moving the truck. We have insurance. It would be great to get a new truck!"
Dad. "Ok."
Love you dad!
